Mahama Inspects 50% Complete Bechem Poultry Factory, Sends Strong Message to Ghanaian Youth

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism that the completion of the Poultry and Meat Processing Factory at Bechem in the Ahafo Region will establish the town as Ghana’s chicken capital.

The President shared this vision during an inspection of construction work at the facility, which is currently about 50 per cent complete.

The visit was part of the first day of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region.

The project is expected to strengthen Ghana’s poultry industry by providing modern facilities for processing poultry, meat and animal feed.

President Mahama officially cut the sod for the construction of the factory on November 27, 2025, with commissioning scheduled for the end of the first quarter of 2027.

During the inspection, Mahama encouraged young people in Bechem to take advantage of the opportunities the facility is expected to create by venturing into poultry farming.

He noted that the factory would provide a ready market for locally raised poultry, potentially making poultry farming a more attractive business for young people in the area.

The President also highlighted the importance of developing the entire poultry value chain to ensure a reliable supply of birds for processing once the factory becomes operational.

He explained that the government introduced the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative before construction began to boost poultry production and ensure that sufficient birds would be available to supply the processing facility.

According to Mahama, the factory would contribute to employment creation when completed, offering economic opportunities to residents of Bechem and surrounding communities.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, also highlighted progress in domestic poultry production following the introduction of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme.

Opoku reported that Ghana’s share of domestic poultry production had increased from 4.6 per cent to 22 per cent as of May 2026.
