The suspect was arrested on Saturday, 10 October, a week after the collision on 3 October involving a Volkswagen Polo, a Toyota Fortuner and a state vehicle transporting members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

According to SAPS, the driver of the Toyota Fortuner allegedly collided with the Volkswagen Polo, resulting in a head-on collision involving the police vehicle.

The driver of the Polo and a passenger were declared dead at the scene, while a SAPS member sustained injuries.

The Fortuner driver allegedly fled the scene following the crash.

Police members managed to obtain a partial registration number of the Toyota Fortuner, providing investigators with a crucial lead.

A subsequent investigation by Lieutenant Colonel Boitumelo Seleke of the Northern Cape Operational Response Services led police to the vehicle, which had reportedly been taken to a panel-beating establishment in Kimberley.

The 48-year-old suspect was arrested and the vehicle allegedly involved in the collision was seized as part of the investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and defeating the ends of justice.

Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended Seleke for his determination and investigative work, saying the officer’s efforts helped ensure that the suspect was brought before the courts.

The case highlights the importance of evidence gathered at collision scenes, with even a partial registration number potentially providing investigators with a vital lead when tracking down a vehicle allegedly involved in a serious crash.

The circumstances surrounding the collision and the allegations against the suspect will be dealt with through the legal process.
