Manchester United Receive Carlos Baleba Verdict After Midfielder Makes Debut
According to a report by Football Transfer on Sunday October 11, 2026, Manchester United have received encouraging feedback about Carlos Baleba following his long-awaited debut during Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils struggled throughout the contest and faced boos from supporters after surrendering two valuable points despite enjoying a numerical advantage during the closing stages of the match.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 73rd minute before Tottenham substitute Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw, leaving the visitors with ten players.
However, Michael Carrick’s team failed to capitalise on their advantage, retreating defensively before Dominic Solanke equalised during stoppage time with a header from Sandro Tonali’s cross.
The result continued United’s frustrating record against opponents reduced to ten players, following their earlier defeat against Manchester City, who lost Phil Foden before Erling Haaland scored the winner.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Baleba’s introduction offered supporters something positive. The 22-year-old midfielder entered during the second half and immediately demonstrated qualities that could strengthen United’s midfield.
Several media outlets awarded the Cameroon international ratings between five and seven out of ten, reflecting an encouraging first appearance despite the team’s inability to secure victory.
BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone awarded Baleba five out of ten, writing: “Introduction injected life into home fans and made plenty of tackles.” His assessment highlighted the midfielder’s immediate influence.
Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler gave him six out of ten, observing: “What a boost it is for United to have him available. United were better with him on the field.”
Manchester Evening News reporter Tyrone Marshall was particularly impressed, awarding Baleba seven out of ten. He wrote: “Made an impact with his first touch and can see he will bring energy to this team. Calm on the ball under pressure.”
GOAL and Daily Express journalist Charlie Malam also awarded Baleba six out of ten, praising his midfield contribution and an impressive pass that released Mbeumo during the closing stages.
United signed Baleba from Brighton in August for a reported €75.9 million, equivalent to £64.3 million, hoping his arrival would help address their persistent midfield difficulties.
The midfielder now faces Atletico Madrid in the Champions League before United travel to Leeds United next Sunday. The struggling club have won only two of eight matches this season, recording their worst start in four decades and sitting 12th in the Premier League.
