Delhi Police Release Video to Counter CJP’s Claims That Abhijeet Dipke Was Denied Call to Family
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Sunday accused the Delhi Police of acting “insensitively and inhumanly” after Abhijeet Dipke’s grandmother passed away, alleging that he was denied an opportunity to speak to his anxious parents. The Delhi Police rejected the charge and released a video of its interaction with Dipke, claiming the party had misrepresented the incident.
The controversy follows allegations by the CJP that Dipke was not allowed to contact his family despite the death of his grandmother. Delhi Police maintained that the news was conveyed to him promptly and sensitively, and that he was offered assistance to attend the funeral but declined the arrangements.
Addressing the media, DCP Neha Yadav said police officers approached Dipke as soon as they received information about his grandmother’s death.
“He was asked with sensitivity what kind of assistance he required—such as a flight, a phone call, or anything else. He was repeatedly asked if he wished to speak to his parents, but he refused. He was even given time to consider the matter and was asked again later,” Yadav said.
The police also released a video showing personnel interacting with CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and offering to make arrangements for him to travel to attend his grandmother’s funeral.
Earlier on Sunday, CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka accused the police of handling the situation insensitively and attempting to turn it into a spectacle by bringing cameras and microphones.
“Even when Dipke was informed about the unfortunate news, Delhi Police showed an extremely inhuman face. They tried to make the event into a spectacle by showing up with cameras and microphones,” Ranka alleged.
He further claimed that Dipke had repeatedly pleaded to speak to his cousin because his parents had heart conditions and could become anxious easily, but the police did not allow him to do so.
The Delhi Police, however, maintained that Dipke had been offered the opportunity to speak to his family and assistance with travel arrangements. It said the facts had been misrepresented during the CJP’s press conference.
Dipke was in Delhi to participate in an anti-Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) protest after leaving Mumbai, where his grandmother passed away. He was detained by the Delhi Police at the Delhi airport on Saturday.
The competing accounts from the CJP and the Delhi Police have placed the circumstances surrounding the communication of the family bereavement and the assistance offered to Dipke at the centre of the dispute.
