The police chief of the city of Erie, Rick Lorah, said that the attacker, a 45-year-old man, was related to seven of the victims of Friday’s shooting, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman.
Video and audio evidence recovered by investigators showed two “distressed” women arriving at the house shortly before 5 in the afternoon and knocking on the door, he said. The attacker then came out and shot them before going back inside.
Police arrived and found the two women dead outside. Inside they found the bodies of a 5-year-old boy, a 1-year-old girl, two more women, two young men, and the attacker.
“Lorah declined to speak about the reason, but said investigators would speak with other relatives and examine the cell phones of the women who were killed outside the home.
“They knew that something was happening in that house,” he said. “We have to find out what it is about.”
Officers arrived within minutes after receiving an alert through ShotSpotter, a controversial gunshot detection system that relies on artificial intelligence and a network of microphones to identify gunfire. The city stated in a release that no additional shots were fired after that.
“The sounds heard during the police response, which could have been mistaken for gunshots, were flashbang grenades related to the tactical response of law enforcement,” the city said.
“I haven’t seen anything like this in my more than 28 years (in the Police),” Lorah told a local news outlet earlier in the day. “I’m not sure the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and devastation that we have just witnessed.”
Governor Josh Shapiro said he offered the “full support” of his administration to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin. Erie is about 190 kilometers (120 miles) north of Pittsburgh.
