Nicki Minaj Raises Fresh Alarm Over Killing of Christians in Nigeria

American rapper Nicki Minaj has called on celebrities, social media influencers and other public figures to speak out against reported violence targeting Christians in Nigeria.

Minaj made the appeal while speaking at the X Takeover event held at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas.

She said her connection to Nigeria, through her pastor and Nigerian fans, had drawn her attention to reports of attacks against Christians in the country.

The rapper expressed concern over what she described as the treatment of Christians because of their religious beliefs.

She questioned why the issue had not received greater attention from prominent figures in the entertainment industry and other influential circles.

Speaking during the event, Minaj said, “For Nigeria personally, my pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him and of course, I have a lot of Nigerian barbs but what I started seeing was the brutality in which Christians are being treated there just for being Christians and I thought why isn’t anyone making a big deal out of this?

“You know and sometimes when things aren’t cool like to talk about, people don’t just talk about it so right now.

“Actually I’m hoping that more celebrities or people, influencers, I’m hoping that they come onboards the train to start speaking out about what’s happening to Christians in Nigeria and I look forward to doing more to help in that way in that cause.”

Her comment have renewed attention on insecurity and religiously motivated violence in Nigeria, where attacks on communities, places of worship and individuals have remained a major concern in several parts of the country.

Minaj, who is widely known for her international music career and large social media following, also indicated that she wanted to do more to support efforts aimed at addressing the reported persecution of Christians.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has repeatedly raised concerns about religious freedom in Nigeria.

In its reports, the commission has documented attacks affecting Christian and Muslim communities, including violence involving extremist groups, armed militants and criminal gangs.

It has also called for stronger measures to protect people from religious persecution and other forms of violence.

However, the Nigerian government has disputed claims that the country’s security crisis represents a systematic campaign against Christians.

Officials have maintained that the violence is driven by several factors, including terrorism, banditry, communal clashes and criminal activities, which affect people across religious and ethnic lines.

Politics Nigeria reported that the Federal Government rejected allegations that terrorists were carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians.

It argued that presenting the country’s security challenges as a campaign against one religious group failed to reflect the complexity of the situation.

The government has also maintained that it remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Despite the disagreement over how the violence should be characterised, reports of killings, abductions and attacks on religious communities have continued to attract international attention.
