Akufo-Addo Cabinet considered Ghana’s BRICS membership in 2023 – Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said the Akufo-Addo administration considered Ghana’s possible membership of BRICS in 2023 and established a ministerial committee to examine the implications of joining the bloc.

Speaking on Keypoints on TV3, Ablakwa presented what he described as a Cabinet memorandum dated September 11, 2023, which outlined the decision taken at a Cabinet meeting held on September 7 that year.

According to him, the Cabinet was briefed on Ghana’s participation in the 15th BRICS summit and subsequently agreed to establish a committee to assess the merits and demerits of membership.

The committee was tasked with advising the government on the implications of joining the bloc, with its membership drawn from the Foreign Affairs, National Security, Finance and Trade ministries, as well as the Attorney-General’s Department.

Ablakwa said the committee went on to produce a report dated October 30, 2023, which recommended that Ghana acknowledge the vision behind BRICS and express interest in joining.

He also referred to a separate technical committee report prepared in October 2023 after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened stakeholders from selected ministries to examine the possible implications of membership.

The minister said the two reports showed that the previous administration had formally examined the possibility of Ghana joining BRICS rather than dismissing the idea outright.

He presented the documents during the programme as evidence of the previous government’s position on the bloc, which has become a subject of political debate following the current administration’s decision to pursue membership.
