Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 69-year-old Wilmington man Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred October 9, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on northbound Philadelphia Pike, north of East HollyOak Road.

According to investigators, a Jeep Cherokee was traveling in the left northbound lane when a man operating an electricwheelchair left the sidewalk along the east side of Philadelphia Pike and entered the roadway. The Jeep struck the man.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police said the Jeep’s driver, a 51-year-old woman from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, initially stopped at the crash scene but later drove away. Troopers subsequently located the woman and her vehicle at a nearby residence.

The driver has not been arrested. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence to determine whether criminal chargesare warranted.

Philadelphia Pike was closed for approximately three hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
