Forget apple picking, sweater weather, or even Halloween—as a fragrance expert, the reason I look forward to autumn is because of the perfume. After months of sticking to breezy citrus and aquatic scents out of fear of nauseating my coworkers, I’m more than ready to trade them in for deeper, richer notes that embrace the season’s cozy vibes: think aromatic cardamom, cashmere musks, and dark fruits like pomegranate and plum.
There’s an overwhelming number of new perfumes on the market (not to mention the classics we reach for every year), so our team of scent-loving editors curated a list of only the very best fall perfumes. We wore each scent on this list for an entire day in the name of ~science~, noting how it transformed over time and how many hours it lasted on skin. Then, we rated the strength of each on a scale from 1 to 5—with 1 being a barely-there skin scent, and 5 being a beast-mode powerhouse that can fill a room.
Every single fragrance included on this list is a scent we’re actually wearing this season, so consider this your Cosmo editor-curated guide to the best fall perfumes of 2026.
“Once it gets colder out, pretty much one of the only things that can lure me out of my apartment is a cardamom bun from my favorite bakery, and this perfume smells almost freakishly identical—from the spiced dough to the toasted sugar crystal topping. I do wish the fresh, aromatic cardamom top note lasted longer, but the milky coconut and vanilla drydown is equally cozy and sticks to my skin for hours. I can’t wait to smell this on my sweaters all season long.”—LAUREN GRUBER, SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: To pick up a sweet treat from a trendy bakery
"Sweet but not too sweet—the perfect fall fragrance. It’s warm and cozy with hints of fig, vanilla, and of course, chai. It made me feel like I was sitting in a coffee shop on a cool fall day. It’s relaxing and not overwhelming or “sticky,” which I find some gourmand fragrances can be. I’d wear this to work, or even just at home to relax in sweatpants with a cup of tea!"—VERONICA LOPEZ, FORMER SEX & RELATIONSHIPS EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: To spend an afternoon reading in a coffee shop
“I normally don’t gravitate toward things that smell overly fruity, but this is a nicely balanced mix of plum and mandarin, without smelling like candy. I appreciate the crisp, fresh smell, and even after six hours of wear it still offers a lovely softer hint of the fragrance on my skin. The beautiful plum-colored box and bottle instantly put me in the mood for autumn.”—ANGEL MADISON, SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: For a girls’ night out
“Upon first spritz, I get loads of raspberry. But it doesn’t feel juvenile at all. On the contrary, it’s quite sophisticated. I genuinely think anyone, of any generation, could wear this… I’ve already worn this countless times and received a gazillion compliments, even from those who typically have very different perfume tastes than I do.”—BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: On a shopping spree with your bestie
"The first day I tested this perfume (before it was available to the public, mind you), I went to a concert by myself. And unbeknownst to me, I’d suddenly befriended a gazillion people at the show because they all wanted to know what perfume I was wearing. It smells like burning palo santo at a hot yoga class—woody and a little salty. The creaminess comes through as the day goes on. Guaranteed, if I’m wearing a white T-shirt, I’ve sprayed this scent on top. It just smells like someone who has their life together."—BG
When we’re wearing it: For an everyday pick-me-up
“Pomegranate is such an underrated perfume note in my opinion, and this scent really does it justice. The opening is tart and juicy, and the oud note is smooth and sophisticated without being cloying—the combination reminds me of mulled wine. Wearing this makes me feel like Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic: flirty, powerful, and a little dangerous. Just be sure to go easy with this one, since a few sprays lasted all day.”—LG
When we’re wearing it: To score compliments at a Halloween party
“This is not your typical vanilla; in fact, this is probably the vanilla for those who aren’t into sweet and gourmand scents. On my skin, there’s a slight sweetness that comes through, but it does lean more unisex from the patchouli. It kind of smells like a luxury spa, or a hotel; it’s oddly calming and cozy, but smells expensive.”—ANVITA REDDY, SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: To go glamping at a fancy resort
"I didn’t think I was going to be sold on this fragrance upon first spray, but I absolutely love how it settled! The strong citrus became subtle quickly and the white amber started coming through more. As a fragrance novice who’s been looking for a signature scent, I plan to continue wearing this as an everyday perfume, even beyond fall. I’m not Remi’s only new fan, either: When my sister smelled it on me, she asked to try it and fell in love with it herself. In fact, she requested a bottle for Christmas!"—CRISTINA CORVINO, DEPUTY MANAGING SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: To feel put-together at the office
"The whole cereal milk-perfume thing made me worried this scent would be juvenile, but it’s far from it. I love spraying it on my pajamas and smelling it as I’m drifting off to sleep. It’s just so cozy and nostalgic—like waking up to eat cereal in front of the TV and watch cartoons on a Saturday morning. But it’s not like I’m truly drenching myself in cereal either. There’s pink pepper for some spice and bergamot for a hint of citrus. It’s definitely a skin scent on me, but that’s exactly how I like it: just enough to smell on myself, but not across the room."—BG
When we’re wearing it: To spend a lazy Saturday watching cartoons
“This fragrance transports me to early mornings sitting on the deck of a cabin by the lake. I have a steaming cup of coffee in hand and a light blanket thrown over my shoulders. It rained last night, but my cozy rocking chair is miraculously dry. It smells comfortable and fresh and dewy and light.”—DANIELLE COHEN, CONTRIBUTOR
When we’re wearing it: For a subtle, plane-friendly scent
“Influxious’s Gold Standard is aptly named, and wearing it makes me feel sophisticated and powerful. The fragrance is layered with depth; the fruity and spicy notes take center stage first and then it fades into a deep amber vanilla that melts into the skin. While it has a wide range of notes like blood orange, golden mango, saffron, and rum to name a few, it all merges together to create a warm, beautiful scent that’s perfect for fall.”—AR
When we’re wearing it: To smell expensive on a date night
“I’m a sucker for a subtle skin scent, but 222 smells completely unique to anything in my collection—in the best way possible. Its lactonic top notes make it rich, warm, and soothing, while its base notes of musk and vanilla cream linger on your skin for an irresistibly cozy aroma. Pairs best with a luxurious cashmere sweater and a piping hot latte.” —SAMANTHA JONES, SENIOR SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: While walking through Central Park on a misty morning, coffee in hand
"I usually associate floral perfumes with spring and summer, but this one is undeniably perfect for cooler weather. Odéon is a smooth, rich rose scent, with a hefty dose of amber and cashmeran that gives it depth. It’s inspired by Parisian cafe culture—and since I studied abroad there (hold the eyerolls), I feel qualified to say that this scent embodies the city’s romantic allure. It smells like window shopping in boutiques I can’t afford and moonlit strolls along the Seine."—LG
When we’re wearing it: To wander around a new city
"I owned the OG scent back in the day and it made me feel like a fancy lady. This one is an even more grounded, sophisticated version. It’s very chic. Martha Stewart is a spokesperson for this scent and that totally makes sense—it’s sexy, timeless, and delicious (like Martha). I love a good gourmand scent but the older I get, the less I want to smell like a cupcake. This strikes the perfect balance of vanilla and wood without being overly sweet!"—HANNAH OH, FORMER SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: While hosting a bougie dinner party
“I’m not saying Zendaya is the reason I’m obsessed with this perfume, but I’m not not saying it. Don’t let the sweet part of the name fool you. It’s not nearly as sweet as you’d expect it to be. I don’t typically go for white florals, but those notes don’t overpower the fruity, syrupy ones here. Plus I love how it fades into a nice, subtle skin scent after a few hours.”—SARAH MABERRY, SHOPPING EDITOR
When we’re wearing it: Mingling with coworkers at happy hour
"Inspired by Brooklyn jazz clubs circa 2013, it smells just as its name suggests—like a glass of cognac (with an ambery hue to match), worn-in leather, and just a hint of smokiness. It’s the kind of irresistibly cozy, quiet luxury scent that makes people linger in a hug just to catch another whiff. Best paired with a slinky gown, sharp cat-eye, and a sweeping bouffant updo à la Sophia Loren."—SAM PETERS, CONTRIBUTOR
"This is my all-time favorite woodsy perfume—hands down. It smells like camping. Not the smokey campfire or the sticky marshmallows, though. But the woods in the fire, the dew-covered tree trunks in the early mornings, the cozy smell of your musky sleeping bag."—BG
When we’re wearing it: On a hiking trip upstate
I tapped 11 of my fellow editors to help me test fall perfumes across a range of scent families, formats, and price points. We wore each scent for at least 12 hours, noting how many hours it lasted on skin. Then, we ranked the strength on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being a subtle skin scent and 5 being a powerful, beast-mode fragrance.
Finally, we gave our honest review, considering how the perfume transformed over time, how it made us feel, and when we would wear it IRL.
Sure, autumn is typically associated with warm and spicy scents, but don’t feel limited to only choosing scents that belong in a pumpkin spice candle. To exude truly ~immaculate~ fall vibes, it’s all about finding a perfume that smells good *to you* and makes you feel confident.
Not sure where to start? Here’s a perfume shopping hack: Take stock of your current favorite scents and look at what notes they have in common (like bergamot, vanilla, or sandalwood). Then, look out for perfumes with those same notes. Odds are, you’ll find your next signature scent—and maybe discover some new favorite notes in the process.
Scent preferences are highly personal, but it does help to take the season into account when choosing a fall fragrance. Hot weather makes perfume smell stronger and more potent by increasing the rate of evaporation (science!), whereas perfume sits closer to the skin in colder weather. Since fall temperatures tend towards the mild side, you can get away with wearing heavier notes like vanilla, leather, and cedar that might be kiiinda nauseating in the summer heat.
On the other hand, fall weather means you may not get the best performance out of lighter notes like citruses, herbs, and florals, since they evaporate the quickest and won’t smell as strong. Want your fresher scents to smell … smellier? Try layering them with a solid perfume or perfume oil to increase their longevity.
