HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaii Island police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that left a 77-year-old man in critical condition Friday night, Oct. 9.
The collision happened around 8:37 p.m. on Ponahawai Street between Komohana and Kapiolani streets.
Investigators said a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling mauka on Ponahawai Street when it crossed the centerline and collided with a 2013 Toyota Corolla traveling makai.
The 77-year-old Hilo man driving the pickup was found unresponsive at the scene and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The 59-year-old woman driving the Corolla was also transported to the hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time.
Members of the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit responded and assisted with the investigation.
