They Really Stretched Us During Negotiations — GES PRO Daniel Fenyi Praises GNAT And NAGRAT Leaders

Ghana Education Service (GES) Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi has praised the presidents of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for their strong representation during negotiations to end the nationwide teachers’ strike.

In a Facebook post published on October 10, 2026, Fenyi highlighted the legal qualifications of both union leaders, noting that they are lawyers who remain employed as teachers under the GES. He suggested that their professional backgrounds contributed to the pressure placed on the government’s negotiating team.

Fenyi described their approach as an impressive example of union leadership and expressed satisfaction with the eventual outcome of the discussions, indicating that the agreement represented a positive development for Ghana.

His comments followed the suspension of a nationwide teachers’ strike that disrupted academic activities for approximately two weeks. The industrial action was triggered by outstanding payments and concerns about teachers’ conditions of service, with the unions demanding concrete commitments from the government.

Negotiations involving the teacher unions and the government’s team, represented by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), resulted in several assurances aimed at addressing the outstanding obligations.

Under the agreement, promotion arrears owed to approximately 51,000 teachers are expected to be paid by October 16, 2026, while the remaining payments are scheduled for completion before the end of October. The government also pledged to pay the Complimentary Digital Instruction Support Allowance in November and the Continuous Professional Development Allowance in December 2026.

Additionally, the parties agreed to work towards finalising arrangements for the Deprived Area Allowance, with a roadmap expected in January 2027.

With the strike suspended, teachers are expected to return to their classrooms as attention shifts to the implementation of the government’s commitments. The timely fulfilment of these promises will be essential to maintaining industrial harmony and preventing further disruptions to teaching and learning across Ghana.
