While the outrage around Manchester City increases, Brentford continue to rise and fully deserve their reputation as a remarkably smart and progressive club.

Keith Andrews and his players are now eight matches unbeaten in all competitions and were refusing to give up that run here, frustrating Aston Villa with an 80th-minute equaliser.

A beacon for similarly sized clubs in terms of quality recruitment, mid-term and long-term planning, analysis and data, Brentford are one of the antidotes to the Big Six beasts and their monstrous revenues.

Brighton are perhaps even more renowned for their highly profitable model, but Brentford are building some momentum of their own.

Villa are still waiting for their first home win of the season and were behind after 10 minutes when Yehor Yarmolyuk pounced to punish Tyrone Mings for a poor pass out of defence.

Nicolas Jackson equalised within 88 seconds and Villa appeared in the box seat when their talismanic captain, John McGinn, struck late in the second half.

McGinn certainly enjoyed his goal, rubbing his stomach and tucking his shirt into his shorts after receiving some jibes over his weight from Brentford’s fans.

Game over? Not so. Within the space of two and a half minutes Brentford were level when Kristoffer Ajer exchanged passes with Jaidon Anthony to extend their unbeaten run.
