Enough Of The Bloodshed – Ghana Must Stop Elections Where People Win With Fists, Not Votes – Arthur

Former NPP Presidential Aspirant, Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy, has sent a strong warning to Ghana: we must move towards elections where outcomes are not determined by the threat or use of violence.

He says Ghanaian democracy is bleeding, and no drop of Ghanaian blood is worth anybody’s political ambition.

Dr Arthur Kennedy was reacting to the shameful violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 11, 2025, where voters, journalists and even former Minister Hawa Koomson were assaulted.

He said what he saw was a national embarrassment.

“We saw a video in which somebody dived at a woman like he was a Kung Fu fighter. We saw policemen standing by while people were assaulted; some of them walked away.”

“Ghanaian citizens got up to go and vote, media personnel got up to go and cover the election, and we saw assault.”

For him, it is not about investigation again. It is about arrest and punishment.

“Nobody ought to be telling us about investigations. There ought to be arrests.”

Dr Kennedy slammed the Ghana Police for standing by while thugs stormed polling stations at St Peter’s Methodist Church in Odorkor. If police cannot protect a handful of polling stations, how will they protect the whole country in 2028?

“If the national police cannot protect people at a polling station, how are they going to protect us during national elections?”

He warned that Ghana has a bad record – at least 6 deaths in 2024 elections and 8 deaths in 2020 elections linked to election violence, even after we passed the Vigilantism Act in 2019.

Dr Kennedy says government must stop acting like a political party fighting for power and start acting like a government responsible for security.

“What must change is that governments must understand that they are not partisans fighting for power anymore. They are responsible for security in the state. People ought to be able to get up at home, go to vote and go home peacefully. We need to count our votes.”

He rejected the usual politics of “you also did it, so we will also do it,” saying an eye for an eye will leave everybody blind.

His message is clear: Ghana must move forward to elections where people win because Ghanaians voted for them, not because thugs beat people to win.
