South East Has The Lowest Number Of Registered Voters In The Country, This Is Not Good For The Region–Shehu Sani
Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed concern over the low number of registered voters in the South-East, describing the development as a serious political issue for the region.
Sani raised the concern while commenting on the disparity in voter registration across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, suggesting that the figures could have implications for the region’s political participation and electoral influence.
“The South East has the lowest number of registered voters in the country. This is a serious political issue for the region,” he stated.
The former lawmaker identified two possible explanations for the situation, suggesting that many people from the region might have registered to vote in other states or that there had been inadequate mobilisation and public enlightenment on the importance of voter registration.
He also drew attention to the North-West, which he said had the lowest literacy rate but the highest number of registered voters in the country.
“The North West is the lowest in literacy rate and the highest in voter registration. A thought for political scientists,” Sani added.
His comments highlight questions about voter registration, political mobilisation and electoral participation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, particularly as political activities gather momentum ahead of future elections.
However, further investigation would be needed to establish the factors responsible for the disparity in registration figures.
