3 Killed, 2 Arrested After Joint Operation Foils Roodepoort Cash-in-Transit Heist

A joint law enforcement operation has disrupted a suspected cash-in-transit robbery in Gauteng, leaving three suspects dead, two others arrested and three civilians injured following a shootout along the N12 highway near Roodepoort.

The incident occurred on Friday, 9 October 2026, after police received intelligence indicating that suspects were travelling towards Roodepoort in two vehicles in preparation for a planned robbery.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers tracked the vehicles before intercepting a white Mercedes-Benz on Kliprivier Road. The confrontation escalated when the occupants allegedly opened fire on law enforcement officers.

Police returned fire, triggering a sequence of events that ended with the Mercedes-Benz crashing into two civilian vehicles.

SAPS said officers acting on intelligence identified two vehicles believed to be connected to the planned cash-in-transit heist.

The first vehicle, a white Mercedes-Benz, was intercepted at traffic signals along Kliprivier Road. Police reportedly instructed the occupants to stop, but the men allegedly responded by firing at officers.

Law enforcement members returned fire during the confrontation. The driver subsequently lost control of the Mercedes-Benz, which collided with two civilian vehicles on the N12 highway.

All three men inside the Mercedes-Benz were fatally wounded and declared dead at the scene.

The collision also left three civilians injured. They were transported to hospital for medical treatment, although further details about the extent of their injuries were not immediately provided.

The incident highlights the dangers posed to ordinary road users when armed confrontations occur on busy public roads.

Following the shooting, officers searched the wreckage of the Mercedes-Benz and reportedly recovered two AK-47 assault rifles, several ammunition magazines and loose live rounds.

The discovery of the weapons and ammunition forms part of the investigation into the suspected robbery and the events that led to the deadly confrontation.

Authorities have not provided further details about the intended target of the alleged cash-in-transit heist or the identities of the three deceased suspects.

The police operation involved several law enforcement and security agencies working together to prevent the suspected robbery before it could take place.

Investigators subsequently tracked down the second vehicle believed to be linked to the planned robbery.

The white Audi was located in Johannesburg’s central business district shortly after the initial confrontation.

Two alleged accomplices were arrested without further incident, bringing the total number of suspects reported killed or arrested during the operation to five.

The two arrested suspects are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged robbery. Further details about possible charges and their court appearances were not immediately available.

Police have not indicated whether additional suspects may still be at large.

Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the officers and security personnel involved in the operation.

The task force reportedly included specialised SAPS units, traffic airwing officers and private security teams.

Mthombeni praised the coordinated response, describing the intervention as decisive action that prevented what could have developed into a violent armed robbery.

The operation also demonstrated the role of intelligence-sharing and cooperation between public law enforcement agencies and private security operators in efforts to combat organised crime.

Cash-in-transit robberies remain a serious security concern because they frequently involve heavily armed suspects and expose security personnel, motorists and bystanders to potential danger.

The latest incident comes less than two weeks after three suspected robbers were reportedly killed during a shootout with police in Tshwane.

Authorities continue to face pressure to disrupt organised criminal groups and prevent attacks on cash transport vehicles.

In the Roodepoort case, investigators are expected to examine the recovered firearms, ammunition, vehicles and other available evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the planned robbery.

While the operation prevented the suspected heist, the injuries suffered by three civilians underscore the risks such confrontations pose to members of the public.

Police have yet to release further information about the arrested suspects or confirm whether more arrests are anticipated as investigations continue.
