Shehbaz calls for effective measures to encourage healthy lifestyles among young people, particularly students
During a meeting with national and international medical experts, the prime minister called for healthier lifestyles among students, nationwide awareness campaigns and coordinated action on research, early diagnosis and disease prevention.
The prime minister said diabetes has become a growing health challenge that requires a coordinated and effective national response. He emphasised that while treatment remains essential, stronger preventive measures are urgently needed to reduce the disease burden.
Shehbaz directed the relevant institutions to formulate a clear national policy and actionable plans aligned with Pakistan’s priorities. He said the strategy should bring together research, public awareness and preventive measures to improve the country’s response to diabetes and related diseases.
The prime minister also stressed the need to strengthen efforts to educate the public about diabetes prevention, timely diagnosis and healthy living habits.

He emphasised the importance of promoting balanced diets, regular physical activity and healthy daily routines to help prevent diabetes. The prime minister said public awareness initiatives should be expanded nationwide to encourage people to adopt healthier habits.
He also directed that information about diabetes prevention, early diagnosis and healthy living be widely disseminated through television, radio, digital platforms and other communication channels.
The initiative aims to make reliable information more accessible to the public and encourage people to take preventive steps before the disease develops or progresses.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of regional and international cooperation in tackling the growing diabetes challenge. He called on relevant institutions to draw on global research, international experience and established best practices to strengthen Pakistan’s disease prevention measures.
Shehbaz Sharif said coordinated planning and evidence-based policies were essential to making prevention efforts more effective. He urged institutions to work together on research, awareness campaigns and practical measures that support the national strategy.
The meeting was attended by a delegation of Pakistani and international medical experts specialising in diabetes treatment and prevention. The delegation is visiting Pakistan to participate in an endocrinology seminar.
The experts came from various countries and were led by Dr Syed Abbas Raza, president of the International Society of Endocrinology.
Federal ministers Ahad Khan Cheema and Mustafa Kamal, Minister of State for Health Dr Malik Mukhtar Bharat, and senior officials from relevant institutions also attended the meeting.
Members of the delegation appreciated recent initiatives and policy implementation aimed at preventing diabetes and other related diseases in Pakistan.
The participants also expressed their commitment to supporting diabetes prevention efforts and public awareness campaigns across the country. They discussed the importance of cooperation between medical experts and relevant institutions to strengthen prevention and improve public understanding of the disease.
During the meeting, the delegation acknowledged the significant contributions of Pakistani medical experts working internationally in the treatment and prevention of diabetes and other diseases.
The discussions underscored the importance of combining effective treatment with early diagnosis, public education, research and international collaboration to address Pakistan’s growing diabetes challenge.
