The Agitation For Biafra Has Gone To The Lowest Because They Believe Obi Is Contesting- Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned northern political leaders against seeking to reclaim the Nigerian presidency from the South during the 2027 general elections, warning that such a move could trigger renewed separatist agitations in different parts of southern Nigeria.

According to a report by Nigerian Tribune published on October 9, 2026, the former lawmaker expressed concern that attempts to alter the existing power-sharing arrangement could heighten political tensions and threaten national unity.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, argued that the principle of rotational presidency should be respected to preserve peace, promote fairness and strengthen relationships among Nigeria’s diverse regions.

He maintained that northern politicians should allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete the South’s turn in the country’s informal power-sharing arrangement before pursuing another opportunity for a northern president.

According to the former senator, denying the South its expected opportunity could create feelings of exclusion and encourage renewed demands for self-determination in the South-West, South-East and South-South.

Sani also highlighted the relationship between political inclusion and separatist movements, particularly in the South-East, where agitation for an independent Biafran state has remained a longstanding issue.

He suggested that the prospect of a South-Easterner contesting for the presidency and potentially emerging victorious had helped reduce the intensity of Biafra-related agitation.

The former lawmaker argued that providing citizens from different regions with a realistic opportunity to attain the highest political office could strengthen their sense of belonging and reduce grievances against the Nigerian state.

Explaining his position, Sani said, “Today, if you look at it, the agitation for Biafra has gone to the lowest point because they are hopeful that one of their own is contesting the presidency of this country,” he said.

He maintained that allowing the South to complete its expected turn would help preserve the current political balance and discourage tensions arising from perceptions of marginalisation.
