MARA: In a new move aimed to strengthen the Tanzania-Germany cooperation in the conservation sector, the two partner countries have officially inaugurated a new gateway to the Serengeti National Park, the reconstructed and upgraded Serengeti Visitor Centre at Seronera.

According to a statement issued by the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), this is a TZS 3.9 bllion tourism facility located at the heart of the sprawling Serengeti National Park as a milestone in conservation education and sustainable tourism.

It was inaugurated on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and forms part of wider German-supported conservation and development efforts in the Serengeti ecosystem, including improvement to feeder roads, education and health infrastructure, and support for community conservation banks that help families save and invest.

Officially opened by Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamad Hassan Chande, the facility gives an opportunity to visitors to understand the Serengeti wildlife, the connection that sustain its ecosystem, and the importance of safeguarding this natural resource for future generations.

Present at the centre’s inaugural ceremony were the Germany Ambassador-designate to Tanzania, Annett Gunther, TANAPA Conseravation Commissioner, Massana Mwishawa and Frankfurt Zoological Society (FSZ) Country Director Maurus Msuha, among other dignitaries.

The centre’s reconstruction was financed by the Germany government through the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and KfW Development Bank under the Serengeti Ecosystem Development and Conservation Project (SEDCP), implemented by TANAPA with support from FZS.

“This centre reflects Tanzania’s commitment to conserving our natural heritage while enhancing the tourism experience,” said the Deputy Minister at the launch ceremony.

TANAPA boss Mwishawa put it succinctly: “We want every visitor to leave Serengeti with a deep understanding of the wildlife they have seen and the ecosystem that sustains it.”
