Today’s Headlines: Petrol Discount Not Subsidy — Presidency; Kano Sports Commission Secretary Dies

The Federal Government said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited would temporarily forgo its petrol retail profit margin and sell fuel at cost to cushion Nigerians from rising global crude oil prices. The Presidency stressed that the measure was not a return to petrol subsidy.

The government also proposed a N1,350-per-litre ceiling on petrol landing costs, with refiners and importers absorbing temporary increases. Other measures include expanded compressed natural gas deployment, increased cash transfers and subsidised credit, reduced road levies, forward crude sales to domestic refineries, and support for vulnerable households.

The Kano State Sports Commission announced the death of its Secretary, Bashir Maizare, who died on Wednesday night. The announcement was made in a statement signed by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Ashiru Gidan-Tudu, on Thursday.

The commission described Maizare’s death as a major loss to Kano’s sports community. Funeral prayers were scheduled for Thursday at his residence in Kofar Wambai, Kano, while the commission prayed for the repose of his soul and strength for his family, colleagues and associates.

The Enugu State Police Command said the arrest of 45-year-old Ani Chidi was connected to allegations of cyberbullying, false accusations and threats to life, not for recording the gun attack on a Nigeria Democratic Congress meeting in Obuoffia-Awkunanaw. The police said residents had petitioned against Chidi over videos he circulated online.

Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said investigations found that Chidi could not substantiate allegations that certain individuals masterminded the attack. He was subsequently arraigned and remanded over cyberbullying and threatening violence, while the investigation into the actual attack remained with Zone 13 Headquarters. The command urged the public to disregard claims that Chidi was detained for filming the incident.

The rescued prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have reunited with their families in Ibadan after spending seven days in captivity following their abduction along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State. The youths were released by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Oyo State on Thursday evening after undergoing debriefing.

Their return triggered emotional scenes as parents embraced their children after days of uncertainty. One of the rescued women, Akande Morenikeji, said the experience was stressful but denied reports of sexual harassment, while another parent confirmed that the families did not pay ransom for their release. The victims had earlier undergone medical checks in Owerri and Ibadan following their rescue.
