Despite FG Discount, Petrol Still N1,430 in Sokoto

Residents of Sokoto State are still buying petroleum at the old rate at Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) mega stations, despite the Federal Government’s announcement of a discount.

Our correspondent in the state reports that consumers are still buying petrol at the old rate at NNPC stations across the state, despite the discount announced by the Federal Government.

It will be recalled that the government announced a reduction in the price of petrol and directed all NNPC mega stations to commence sale of the product at N1,350 per litre.

However, filling stations in Sokoto State have yet to comply with the Federal Government’s directive to sell the product at the new rate. Instead, the stations are selling at the old rate of N1,430 per litre.

Some consumers interviewed expressed disappointment. A commercial motorcycle operator said that as of Friday, NNPC mega stations in the state had yet to start selling at the new price.

He further stated that some other filling stations had closed down instead of complying with the new directive.

A commercial driver, who did not want his name mentioned, also expressed sadness over the development.

According to him, people in the state have not started enjoying the announced discount as pledged.

When contacted, the Manager of the Sokoto NNPC mega station, Abubakar Ahmad, said the station would not commence sale of petroleum at the discounted rate as it had not received any directive from higher authorities to do so.

Ahmad maintained that the station is patiently awaiting written directives from its headquarters before it starts selling at the new price.

With this development, Sokoto residents may have to wait patiently for further directives to NNPC stations before they can enjoy the new discounted petrol price in the state.
