One week, they give fans reason to believe they can compete for something meaningful. The next, they raise doubts all over again with a loss that seems to erase whatever progress they had made. On Thursday, October 8, Dallas fell 24-16 to the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, delivering another performance that was difficult to defend. This time, the frustration even spilled into the AT&T Stadium tunnel, where Dak Prescott faced criticism he did not take particularly well.
As Prescott walked through the tunnel, a stadium worker called the Cowboys’ performance “embarrassing.” Prescott responded by addressing another employee, saying, “You’re real brave. Get him out of here.” Later, during his postgame press conference, the quarterback acknowledged that the man had a right to his opinion and even admitted he might have been right. However, Prescott explained that he was bothered by the worker continuing to make comments while avoiding eye contact with him.
The Cowboys had opportunities to stay in the game, but their mistakes ultimately made any comeback attempt more difficult. In the second half, Bucky Irving broke free for a 72-yard run that helped Tampa Bay take the lead. Later, a pass from Prescott bounced off Ryan Flournoy’s hands and was intercepted by Yaya Diaby. A fumble by KaVontae Turpin then gave the Buccaneers another chance to extend their advantage.
There was still a moment to believe. In the fourth quarter, Prescott led a 99-yard drive and connected with George Pickens on a 13-yard touchdown pass. But just when Dallas needed to capitalize on that momentum, another interception off a deflected pass ended its hopes.
The Cowboys will visit the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, October 18, with a chance to shake off the bitter taste of their latest loss. If they maintain the alternating pattern of results they have shown recently, this would be their week to celebrate.
