Rufai Oseni Questions Tinubu’s 30-Day Petrol Price Relief, Cites Election Timing
Arise Television presenter Rufai Oseni has questioned the timing of the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations, arguing that the intervention contradicts its long-standing opposition to fuel subsidy.
According to the report by Daily Post on October 9, 2026, speaking on The Morning Show on Friday, Oseni rejected Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele’s explanation that the price reduction was not a subsidy.
He argued that the government’s decision raised questions about who would absorb the cost of the reduced petrol prices.
The broadcaster expressed concern that the relief would last only one month, questioning whether the government would withdraw it after the 2027 general election.
Oseni also credited former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with drawing attention to the need for measures to protect Nigerians from rising fuel costs.
He referred to Atiku’s September 18 speech, in which the former vice president said President Bola Tinubu could take credit for any intervention, regardless of its name, if it eased the burden on citizens.
Oseni maintained that the temporary discount showed the government could provide relief despite its previous resistance to subsidy-related measures. He challenged officials defending the policy to explain how the financial cost of the discount would be covered.
