NPP 1st Vice Chairman Threaten to Sue Party & Bawumia Over Unconstitutional Constitutional Amendment

A major internal crisis is brewing within the New Patriotic Party after its 1st Vice Chairman, Chairman Butey, threatened to drag the party and its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to court over what he describes as an unconstitutional amendment of the party’s constitution. The threat, detailed in a Facebook post, stems from events at the party’s national conference held on 3rd October, where he alleges that a vote on constitutional amendments proceeded despite his direct instruction to postpone the matter.

According to the post, Chairman Butey — a former Central Regional Organizer, three-time Central Regional Chairman and two-time 1st Vice Chairman of the NPP — argues that the party’s current constitution vests the authority to organise national delegates elections in the national chairman or the 1st Vice Chairman, not the flagbearer. He maintains that the leader of the party in opposition is the national chairman, while the president becomes party leader only when the party is in government — a distinction he says is being ignored in the current dispute.

The post claims that before the conference began, Chairman Butey, as host, invoked his powers to postpone the constitutional amendments to the next national conference and directed that only the election of national executives should take place. However, it alleges that the MC of the conference, Anthony Karbo, Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah and a few others went ahead with the voting, in what the post describes as a total disrespect for the rule of law governing the conference.

Chairman Butey is said to be prepared to take the NPP and Dr Bawumia to court should they sign the constitutional amendment, which he insists was not sanctioned by either the national chairman or the 1st Vice Chairman. The post ends with a strong show of support for his stance, urging him to “fight the good fight for the next generation.”

The development raises serious questions about the internal cohesion of the NPP, which is still smarting from its defeat in the 2024 general election. A legal battle involving the party’s flagbearer and a senior national officer could deepen divisions at a time when the party needs unity to rebuild. It also highlights the ongoing tension over the party’s constitutional framework and the balance of power between its national officers and its presidential candidate.
