Michael Carrick Receives Fresh Man Utd Sack Verdict

According to a report by Football Transfers on Friday, October 9, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Lee Sharpe has called on the club’s leadership to remain patient with Michael Carrick, arguing that dismissing the manager at this stage would be premature despite the team’s difficult start to the Premier League season.

United have managed just one win from their opening five league matches, leaving them 12th in the table and raising concerns about their performances under Carrick.

The former midfielder was appointed permanently during the summer after impressing in a caretaker role. However, his position has already come under scrutiny, with bookmakers reportedly identifying him as the leading candidate to become the first Premier League manager dismissed this season.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi is also under pressure, with his side sitting at the bottom of the standings. Meanwhile, speculation continues over whether United’s hierarchy will maintain its support for Carrick amid the disappointing results.

Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has also been linked with the Old Trafford job. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Italian is open to returning to management following his departure from Napoli.

Despite the growing uncertainty, Sharpe believes changing managers now could create further problems for United. Speaking to TEAMtalk, he warned that appointing another coach could force the club to begin another costly squad rebuild to accommodate a different manager’s preferences.

ā€œIt is far too early to sack him. You would just be starting again with another manager who wants different players. I don’t see the point in doing that now,ā€ Sharpe said.

He also questioned United’s transfer strategy, suggesting the club should have brought in more reinforcements during the summer window to improve the squad’s depth and quality.

Sharpe acknowledged that the players have also fallen short of expectations, describing their performances at the start of the campaign as slow and careless. He believes the team must play at a higher tempo and move the ball more quickly if they are to turn their results around.

However, the former winger warned that the period leading up to Christmas will be important in assessing Carrick’s progress. He stressed that United must show clear improvement over the coming weeks if the manager is to strengthen his position.

Sharpe also pointed to Benjamin Sesko’s absence as a major concern for the team. He questioned the decision to use Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha in the false-nine role, arguing that United need a natural centre-forward who can occupy opposition defenders and take advantage of scoring opportunities.
