‘I Lost a Brother’: Pete Edochie Remembers Rawlings, Hopes to Visit His Grave
Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has paid tribute to former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings, saying his return to Ghana has revived the sadness of losing a friend he regarded as a brother.
The 79-year-old Nollywood star arrived on September 29 for Accra Legacy Week and activities celebrating his contribution to African cinema and storytelling.
Reflecting on their friendship, Edochie recalled an enjoyable final meeting during which they spoke at length. Rawlings had promised to visit him in Nigeria, but that reunion never happened.
The actor said photographs of them together often prompted comments about their physical resemblance. People in Nigeria would tell him that the former president looked like his brother.
Both men were also born in 1947, with Edochie’s birthday in March and Rawlings’ in June.
Edochie recalled initially rejecting news of Rawlings’ death because he thought the person speaking to him had confused the former president with his mother, Victoria Agbotui, who had died weeks earlier.
Rawlings died on November 12, 2020. After receiving confirmation, Edochie described the loss in personal terms: “I lost a brother.”
The actor said he hopes to visit Rawlings’ grave during his stay, subject to his production schedule, to pay his respects.
