School Girl Undergoing Treatment in India Forced to Apologize to Kenyans in An Emotional Message
Form Four student Risper Wambui, who is undergoing cancer treatment in India, has asked Kenyans for forgiveness following a controversial video featuring her and her well-wisher, Cukura ya Nairobi, that sparked reactions on social media.
The teenager apologized to the public while sending an emotional message to the man, whose real name is Dennis Njuguna Wakeru, thanking him for standing by her during her difficult moments.
The video showed the two appearing physically close, prompting some Kenyans to question their interaction, especially because Risper is a schoolgirl still undergoing treatment.
In her message, Risper expressed regret over the situation and described Dennis as a brother who had supported her when she felt rejected by people around her.
She recalled the difficult experiences she faced before receiving the support that enabled her to seek specialised medical care abroad. According to Risper, she had taken part in several fundraising activities but had struggled to get the assistance she desperately needed.
The student also revealed that she had faced hurtful remarks at school, where some people referred to her by a nickname linked to her illness.
However, she said Dennis treated her like his younger sister and became one of the people who helped bring her story to the attention of Kenyans.
Risper credited him with encouraging members of the public to contribute towards her treatment, saying his support gave her hope at a time when she felt forgotten.
She also prayed for God’s protection and blessings upon Dennis, expressing gratitude for the sacrifices he had made to help her.
The teenager said she would always remember his kindness and the role he played in helping her access assistance when she needed it most.
The controversy comes as Risper continues receiving specialised treatment in Mumbai, India, for a rare cancer known as gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST), which affects the digestive tract.
Dennis had been among those who helped mobilise support for her medical journey, as Kenyans contributed towards the funds needed for treatment.
The video has since raised questions online about the need to protect the dignity and privacy of a young patient receiving public assistance.
Risper’s message comes amid the debate, as she seeks forgiveness and reaffirms her appreciation for the man she considers a brother.
Her appeal has also brought attention back to her treatment journey and the continued need for support as she battles the illness.
