The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said that on Oct. 6, around 8:40 p.m., deputies responded to River Run Drive after a caller reported hearing an argument and was concerned about what was happening.
36-year-old Jamell Peeler allowed responding deputies to enter his residence. While inside, deputies reportedly saw a large quantity of marijuana.
After seeing the roughly 57 pounds of marijuana in Peeler’s residence, deputies had probable cause to place him in handcuffs. But Peeler was not going to go out lightly.
Body camera footage released by HCSO shows deputies telling Peeler he was being detained.
“For what?” Peeler asked before quickly running away from the deputies trying to arrest him.
A chase on foot ensued as Peeler tried to make a getaway. One deputy managed to grab his shirt, but Peeler knocked the deputy to the ground and continued to flee.
Peeler was eventually found by deputies hiding in a nearby area of bushes. A K9 was brought to the scene, and deputies warned Peeler to come out, or the dog would be released.
Fearing that he was going to get bitten, Peeler finally gave up. He emerges from the bushes and lies on the ground as deputies handcuff him without further incident.
HCSO said a search warrant was later executed at Peeler’s residence, where deputies reportedly found more than 57 pounds of marijuana, MDMA pills, and drug paraphernalia.
According to his jail record, Peeler was booked into the Orient Road Jail at 1:41 a.m. on Oct. 7 and is currently being held without bond.
Peeler faces 15 charges, including trafficking in cannabis between 25 and 2,000 pounds, possession of cannabis with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver within 1,000 feet of an educational institution, three counts of possession of controlled substances, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, battery on a law enforcement officer, and two counts of resisting an officer without violence.
The booking information also lists probation violations that include a felony involving a gun, carrying a concealed firearm, and being a habitual traffic offender.
Peeler was also charged with keeping a public nuisance structure for drug activity and selling a Schedule 1 controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, community center or recreational facility.
Peeler is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
