Kenyans React as Ruto Reveals He Always Gets Sick If He Misses Doing This for Three Weeks
President William Ruto has revealed how much farming means to him, saying he feels sick when he goes for about three weeks without visiting his farm.
The President made the remarks on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during an Agriculture and Food Security town hall at Jamhuri Park in Nairobi, where he met farmers and other players in the agricultural sector.
“I love farming; if I don’t go to the farm in like three weeks, I really get sick,” Ruto said, explaining the special place farming holds in his life.
His remarks came as he outlined his administration’s plans to improve food production, support farmers and strengthen food security across the country.
Ruto said his government had made commitments on agriculture in 2022 and was working to implement them. He explained that accurate information about farmers was important in ensuring government support reached the right people.
According to the President, the government had registered 8.9 million farmers on its digital platform. He said the information helps authorities understand what farmers produce and plan the distribution of agricultural inputs.
The President also defended the government’s focus on supporting food production at the farm level rather than relying mainly on subsidies for consumers.
He argued that improving farming was an important step towards addressing food shortages and reducing the cost of basic food items.
Agriculture remains a major source of income and employment for many Kenyan households, particularly in rural areas. Farmers depend on reliable rainfall, affordable farm inputs and markets where they can sell their produce.
The government has also been promoting subsidised fertiliser as part of efforts to lower production costs and encourage farmers to grow more food.
Ruto’s latest remarks have brought renewed attention to his personal interest in farming and the government’s agricultural agenda.
As the country continues to focus on food security, farmers will be looking for practical measures that improve production, increase earnings and make farming more affordable.
What do you think should be the government’s main priority in supporting Kenyan farmers?
