Good News For Wontumi As Supreme Court Dismisses Ekwow’s $10 Million Defamation Suit Against Him

The Supreme Court of Ghana has rejected an appeal by Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, the Special Envoy for Reparations, in his defamation lawsuit against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.

Spio-Garbrah, who previously served as Trade and Industry Minister, had sought $10 million in compensation from Wontumi, Wontumi TV and Wontumi Radio over comments he claimed had harmed his reputation.

According to Spio-Garbrah, Wontumi allegedly called him a thief during political discussions. He argued that the statement damaged his reputation and warranted legal action.

The case was initially heard by the Kumasi High Court, which dismissed the lawsuit and directed Spio-Garbrah to pay GH¢150,000 in costs. He subsequently challenged the judgment at the Supreme Court.

After reviewing the appeal, a five-judge panel unanimously ruled against Spio-Garbrah, effectively ending his legal challenge to the lower court’s decision.

Wontumi, for his part, maintained that he had no intention of defaming Spio-Garbrah. He explained that his comments stemmed from his interpretation of statements made by former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini.

The Supreme Court’s decision brings the dispute to a close and underscores the importance of considering the legal implications of statements made in political discourse.
