The Oba of Benin Cannot Even Qualify As A Palace Chief Before Me In My Palace – Dokubo
In a video posted on Facebook on Thursday, October 8, 2026, Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler Asari Dokubo discussed traditional leadership and the standards he believes should govern a palace.
In the course of the discussion, Dokubo drew comparisons between traditional institutions and outlined the requirements he believes people must satisfy before holding certain positions in a palace. He made a particular remark about the Oba of Benin and his own traditional institution.
Speaking in the video, Dokubo said, “The Oba of Benin cannot even qualify as a palace chief before me in my palace.” He made this statement while setting out his position on traditional titles and the qualifications required within his own palace.
In Dokubo’s view, traditional institutions have their own structures, customs and standards that decide which positions people may hold. He used his account to lay out the standards he believes should apply within his palace.
The traditional ruler went on to explain that the qualifications for becoming a palace chief should be viewed in light of the customs and structure of the particular traditional institution. He drew this comparison while sharing his views on traditional authority and leadership.
Dokubo’s remarks form part of his wider discussion of traditional institutions, leadership structures and the standards he believes should guide positions within a palace.
He concluded by insisting that, judged by the standards he applies in his own palace, the Oba of Benin would not qualify to become a palace chief.
