Both models support USB4 connectivity, which supports data transfer rates of up to 40Gbps. This means if you have a device with compatible ports, you can get sequential read and write speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and 3,800MB/s respectively with these drives.

The Samsung P9 portable SSD was designed to work even in the harshest environments.

The P9 is Samsung’s flagship portable SSD, designed for professionals and creators who need high-speed, on-the-go storage.

It supports 12K Direct Recording, allowing compatible devices to capture large RAW image files and ultra-high-resolution video directly to the SSD.

Samsung says the P9 is also the first 8TB USB4 portable SSD to offer transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. It has has a more advanced thermal design to ensure continuous operation even in challenging environments.

With up to 8TB of storage, the P9 should appeal to photographers, videographers, and content creators who need fast connectivity and the ability to deal with large files, or who have the need to carry extensive media libraries without relying entirely on cloud storage.

The Samsung P7 portable SSD lacks the advanced thermal design of the pricier P9 SSD.

The P7 is positioned as a more versatile portable SSD for everyday users. It is compatible with a wide range of host devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras.

Despite its lower price, it can also attain transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s if you have a USB4-compatible device.

Samsung says the P7 has been tested to withstand drops of up to 2m, as well as shock and vibration, making it better suited to being carried around in a bag or used on the move.

Both the P9 and P7 are available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities.

The P9 is now available exclusively through the Samsung Online Store, while the P7 will go on sale from 10 October through the Samsung Online Store and selected retail partners.
