Nasa sent tiny glow-in-the-dark squid to the space station; scientists removed gravity to study how their glowing bacteria colonise and influence them
Nasa’s Understanding of Microgravity on Animal-Microbe Interactions investigation, known as UMAMI, sent newly hatched bobtail squid to the International Space Station. The animals, Euprymna scolopes, partner with a luminescent bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, which colonises a specialised light organ and makes the squid glow in the dark.
