Cement and Kenkey Price Brouhaha: Here Are the Current Prices Based on Ground Reports

Claims of a sharp decline in cement prices in Ghana have come under scrutiny as consumers report that prices at retail outlets remain largely unchanged.

Reports circulating online suggested that GHACEM had reduced the price of its 42.5-grade cement from GH₵120 to GH₵82 following the strengthening of the cedi. However, reported checks in Accra and other parts of the country did not show a corresponding reduction.

GHACEM 42.5-grade cement was reportedly still being sold between GH₵120 and GH₵135, while the 32-grade remained at about GH₵110. Dangote cement was also reportedly selling for approximately GH₵128.

Some Ghanaians responded to the claims by posting cement receipts online. However, several of the receipts were dated before the period when the reported price cuts were expected to begin.

Retailers said the continued high prices could be linked to existing stocks bought at higher costs. They explained that lower prices may only become visible once those stocks have been cleared and cheaper supplies reach the market.

Another claim that the price of kenkey had fallen from GH₵5 to GH₵3 also attracted attention. Vendors quickly rejected the report, with one sarcastically questioning whether the price of kenkey was also tied to the exchange rate.

The conflicting information has created uncertainty among consumers, with many questioning whether the reported reductions have yet to take effect or whether the claims are simply inaccurate social media reports.

Until lower prices are reflected at retail outlets, many consumers are likely to remain cautious about claims of significant reductions in the cost of essential goods.
