Bona Mugabe Joins Thousands to Bid Farewell to Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke
HARARE, Zimbabwe — Bona Mugabe, daughter of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, was among the mourners who gathered in Harare on Thursday to pay their final respects to businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke.
Bona joined family members, friends, church leaders, business associates and thousands of mourners who converged at the Chivayo family residence in Gletwin as the couple’s funeral proceedings entered their final stage.
Dressed in black, Bona maintained a sombre presence as mourners gathered to honour the couple, whose deaths in a helicopter crash on September 30 shocked Zimbabwe.
The funeral has attracted considerable public attention, with large crowds turning out during the couple’s final journey through Harare. Their remains were transported through the capital on Wednesday before being taken to the family home, where they lay in state ahead of Thursday’s burial.
The couple are being laid to rest side by side at Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare, bringing to a close days of mourning and funeral ceremonies.
The proceedings have been marked by prayers, hymns, emotional tributes and reflections on the couple’s lives. Members of the Muteke family have also spoken publicly about their loss, describing Lucy as a loving and caring daughter while thanking mourners for standing with the families during the difficult period.
The high-profile attendance, coupled with the huge public turnout, underscores the widespread interest surrounding Chivayo’s final farewell.
