Todayโs Headlines: Over 1,000 Islamic clerics urge Tinubu to review policies or drop re-election bid, Abdulsalami, Kukah Committee Raises The Alarm Over 60 Incidents, Demands Compliance
Over 1,000 Islamic clerics and scholars from northern states gathered in Kano on October 4, 2026, for a conference assessing President Bola Tinubuโs administration ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, titled โAn Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 Elections,โ produced a communique expressing strong dissatisfaction with current conditions. Participants, including scholars, doctors, and professors, focused on the impacts of government policies on ordinary Nigerians.
The clerics specifically condemned the removal of the fuel subsidy, the restructuring of the naira exchange-rate system, increases in electricity tariffs, and ongoing tax reforms. They argued these measures have intensified economic hardship, raised the cost of living, contributed to unemployment, and driven a brain drain of skilled professionals. They also raised concerns about insecurity, including killings and kidnappings, particularly in the North-West and other regions.
The National Peace Committee (NPC) has expressed concerns over 60 election-related incidents across Nigeria following the signing of the first National Peace Accord for the 2027 electoral cycle.
It urged political parties, candidates and security agencies to strengthen their commitment to peaceful and lawful political activities.
The incidents, recorded by the committeeโs Election Security Information (ESI) Hub between August 19 and September 19, 2026, included misinformation and disinformation; attacks and disruptions affecting political activities and assets; political intimidation and threats; political violence; thuggery; and inflammatory statements.

Nigeria must move beyond economic stabilisation and ensure that ongoing reforms translate into productive investment, higher productivity, jobs and improved incomes, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group has said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the NESG, Tayo Adeloju, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja ahead of the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit.
Adeloju said the country had reached a point where economic growth must produce tangible benefits for businesses, workers and households.
Adeloju said the reforms undertaken over the past three years, including subsidy removal, exchange-rate unification, fiscal restructuring and bank recapitalisation, had helped restore macroeconomic stability and improve investor confidence.

Canada has indefinitely suspended plans to expand its medically assisted dying programme to people whose sole medical condition is mental illness.
The decision follows concerns over the lack of consensus on who should qualify for medically assisted dying, known as MAID, under such an expansion.
As reported by the BBC, Canadaโs Justice Minister, Sean Fraser, announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the government believed it was the appropriate course of action despite the continuing debate.
โWhile there is not a perfect consensus on this issue, we believe this is the correct approach,โ Fraser said.
