Dr Alamgir, cardiac arrest survivor, joins Imran Khan’s medical care

Pakistani cardiologist Dr Mohammad Farqad Alamgir, who survived a near-fatal cardiac arrest after being unconscious for around 17 minutes at Dublin Airport in 2020, is now among the doctors involved in the medical care of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

Dr Alamgir is now predominantly based in Lahore, where he works with Punjab government hospitals as well as in the private healthcare sector.

In February 2020, Dr Alamgir suffered a major heart attack at Dublin Airport.

Airport staff and emergency responders immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and used a defibrillator to revive him.

He was subsequently taken to Dublin’s Mater Hospital, where he underwent emergency heart bypass surgery.

Recalling the incident, Dr Alamgir said he had remained unconscious for approximately 17 minutes and credited the airport’s emergency teams with saving his life.

After recovering, he returned to Dublin Airport to meet the emergency personnel who had responded to the medical emergency.

Dr Alamgir, who has extensive professional experience in the United Kingdom, was also part of the medical board that examined Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on August 10, 2026.

The former prime minister remains incarcerated, with his medical condition and access to healthcare receiving continued attention.

Dr Alamgir’s involvement in Khan’s medical care has drawn particular interest given his own experience of surviving a prolonged cardiac arrest and subsequently returning to medical practice.

The cardiologist’s career now spans work in Pakistan and the UK, including clinical practice and involvement in the healthcare system in Punjab.
