Viral video of the church which tycoon was a member that wears white robes
The Johane Marange Apostolic Church is expected to play a role in the burial of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke.
The church has attracted attention in Zimbabwe for its distinctive religious traditions and the large gatherings held by its members during important religious occasions.
Followers of the Johane Marange Apostolic Church are commonly recognised by their white religious clothing. The church also observes a range of practices that distinguish it from other Christian denominations in the country.
Its involvement in Chivayo’s funeral has therefore renewed public interest in the church and its religious traditions as preparations for the couple’s burial continue.
Chivayo and Lucy died on September 30 after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed at Kudenga Farm near Marondera.
The accident caused a fire that severely damaged the aircraft and complicated the recovery of the victims’ remains. The family later announced that there would be no public viewing before burial because of the condition of the remains.
The businessman’s funeral has attracted considerable attention in Zimbabwe with images and videos from the preparations circulating widely online.
As the family prepares to lay the couple to rest the involvement of the Johane Marange Apostolic Church has also prompted renewed discussion about its history beliefs and practices.
The funeral is expected to bring together relatives friends church members and other mourners who will gather to honour Chivayo and Lucy and bid them farewell.
