This Corvette C7 Was Reported Stolen in 2020—Nearly Six Years Later, It Was Found Underwater

Nearly six years later, the Corvette was recovered from the bottom of a river, bringing an unexpected end to the long-running mystery. Despite spending years underwater, the car’s paint and wrap appear to have held up remarkably well.

The owner, identified as Bret McCormick on Instagram, reported his C7 Corvette stolen in Georgia in an Instagram post dated December 11, 2020. There appear to have been no further updates about the stolen Corvette until its recent recovery.

Jeremy Sides of Rapid Compassion Collective Inc., an organization that searches waterways for missing people, vehicles, and environmental hazards, appears to have recovered McCormick’s Corvette from the bottom of a river.

He posted images of the recovered vehicle on September 30, and several details appear to match McCormick’s stolen Corvette, including its dual-tone wrap and the Instagram sticker on the windshield.

Quite obviously, Sides was unaware of who the Corvette belonged to, but only until people on the internet did their research and pointed out in the comments that it belonged to McCormick.

Even if the Corvette was driven into the river at speed, its front bumper could have easily been torn off on impact, yet it remained attached throughout.

As expected, the Corvette’s interior, electrical systems, and engine components are likely to have suffered extensive water damage. Even replacing the engine and electrical systems may not be enough to restore the car to working condition, as nearly six years underwater could have caused significant corrosion to the chassis, potentially compromising its structural integrity.

Many users in the comments section suspected that the Corvette may have been deliberately driven into the river for insurance money, particularly because its exterior components appear to have remained intact. However, there is no way to know what actually happened to the car. If we go by McCormick’s account that the Corvette was stolen, he can at least consider the recovery a form of closure. Many car enthusiasts have fallen victim to vehicle theft, only to never see their cars again.
