Mwanza moves to bolster its drainage systems in preparedness for El Nino rains

MWANZA: REGIONAL Commissioner Salum Hamduni has inspected the implementation of government directives regarding river infrastructure, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

During the inspection today, October 8, 2026, the Regional Commissioner noted that sanitation levels remain unsatisfactory in some areas; specifically, the Mirongo River is clogged with refuse and silt, a situation that could impede water flow during the rains.

CP Hamduni stated that some residents have a habit of failing to pay for waste collection services, opting instead to dump their trash into the Mirongo River.

He urged residents of the Mbugani, Pamba and Mirongo wards to ensure their surroundings remain clean and to abandon the practice of indiscriminate waste disposal.

Furthermore, he called upon citizens to conduct their lives in accordance with established regulations and laws, specifically instructing those living along the banks of the Mirongo River to vacate the area and seek appropriate locations for housing.

Speaking at the*Mlango Mmoja Bridge, CP Hamduni emphasized that environmental cleanliness should become part of the culture for Mwanza residents.

“The Mirongo River is filled with refuse and silt; we must ensure the river is cleaned, and people must stop dumping trash into it,” said CP Hamduni.

The Regional Commissioner has emphasized the need for cooperation between citizens and the relevant authorities to ensure that rivers and residential areas remain clean and safe, especially as the rainy season approaches.
