The bizarre Disney rules that can get you kicked out of its famous theme parks, from a ban on grown-up costumes to strict rules on proposals

It’s known as the Happiest Place on Earth – but only if everyone follows Disney’s strict theme park rules.
Alongside mainstream guidelines such as being respectful to staff and queueing for rides in an orderly fashion, there’s also a raft of little-known boundaries that could see you ejected from the park if you don’t follow them.
From strict restrictions on costumes to advice about how you can get down on bended knee in the park, here’s some of the more unusual Disney laws park-goers should definitely stick to unless they want an early exit…
Children dressed up as their favourite princess or character is a common sight across every Disney park, but not everyone can join in with the fun.
Costumes can only be worn by guests under 14 at Disneyland Resort in California, as well as Walt Disney World in Florida and under 12 at Disneyland Paris.
‘Costumes may not be worn in our theme parks by Guests ages 14 or older,’ Disneyland Resort’s rules read.
Meanwhile, Disneyland Paris states: ‘We also reserve the right, at our own discretion and at any given time, to refuse a visitor the right to wear any type of costume, makeup or tattoo, especially if it is likely to offend, shock or scare children and a family-orientated public, that Euro Disney Associés S.A.S. would consider as inappropriate or if it would impede operations while posing as or portraying any character in costume.’
Given how beautifully the parks are decorated and the many characters roaming around to meet and greet, most guests will want to take photos during their visit.
However, visitors should be mindful they don’t bring selfie sticks to snap their images, as the handy tool is banned.
Disneyland Resort outlines: ‘Selfie sticks, hand-held extension poles for cameras or mobile devices, flags and banners are not allowed in any theme park.’
Guests celebrating a birthday in one of the theme parks might be tempted to bring a wrapped gift for the special person.
They may be disappointed at the security gates however, as it has been widely reported that wrapped presents Disney officials cannot easily see inside of are not allowed in the park.
‘We were once behind someone in the security line who tried to bring in wrapped gifts and they had to unwrap everything,’ someone on Reddit claimed.
‘I’d imagine if you have it in a gift bag that can be looked into, though, that would work.’
It may be tempting to purchase a balloon of your favourite character, or a classic Mickey Mouse-shaped inflatable, but you won’t be able to bring it into Animal Kingdom.
The park is a balloon-free zone according to WDW Magazine, simply to keep the animals safe in case one floats into an enclosure.
Guests can leave their balloons at the ‘Balloon Daycare’ at guest relations where they can pick up their inflatable afterwards.
‘Balloons are not permitted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, water parks, ESPN Wide World of Sports, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (Kidani Village and Jambo House),’ Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules state.
Images often circulate on social media of couples popping the question in front of classic spots in the parks like the castle, but there are apparently some guidelines surrounding proposals to be mindful of.
It has been reported that characters are not allowed to be involved with the proposal or photographed until the person being asked has said yes, Inside the Magic tells.
The special moment should also not be disruptive for other guests, and professional filming of the event is also not permitted.
It may have been your loved ones favourite place to visit, but scattering their ashes in the park is not permitted.
‘Disney parks are private property, and scattering ashes without permission is not only prohibited but may lead to ejection from the park — and, in some cases, a lifetime ban,’ Scattering Ashes claimed.
Lauren, who is known as Lauren the Mortician online, revealed there is a specific protocol in place for when someone brings ashes into the park.
‘I feel morally obligated to tell you you cannot legally or ethically scatter human cremated remains at Disneyland,’ she said, the Mirror reported.
It’s easy to cover thousands of steps when exploring the parks and after all the walking, many guests would probably want to sit down.
Despite how tempting and convenient they are to pack in your bag, folding chairs are not permitted.
‘Folding chairs are not allowed in any theme park or the Downtown Disney District,’ Disneyland Resort’s rules read.
Fortunately there are plenty of spots – benches and restaurants – to have a rest.
Sometimes the magic at Disney can feel so exciting that one might be tempted to run for their favourite ride or to greet a character.
But, for health and safety reasons, this is not allowed.
‘For your safety and the safety of others, please refrain from running except in designated areas,’ Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules state.
