Former Teacher Reveals Why He Left GES Teaching For The Prison Service
According to a report by The BBC Ghana today being Thursday, October 8, 2026, a former basic school teacher at Kwangyako has spoken about his decision to leave the Ghana Education Service (GES) and join the Ghana Prisons Service, citing better financial benefits and improved remuneration as some of the major reasons behind his move.
According to the former teacher, the financial package attached to his new position has been more attractive compared with what he previously received while working under the GES.
He claimed that, in addition to earning a higher salary, he receives more than GH¢6,000 annually as rent allowance, alongside other benefits associated with his current employment.
He suggested that the difference in financial benefits was an important factor in his decision to leave teaching and pursue a career within the Ghana Prisons Service.
The former teacher also expressed concerns about the financial difficulties faced by many teachers in Ghana. According to him, some teachers struggle to meet their everyday financial obligations and find it difficult to save enough money to acquire personal properties because of their earnings.
His comments have emerged at a time when teachers under the Ghana Education Service are engaged in an ongoing strike over concerns about their working conditions, welfare and outstanding financial obligations.
The strike has brought renewed public attention to issues surrounding teacher remuneration, allowances and the general conditions under which educators operate.
The former teacher’s experience has consequently added another perspective to the broader debate about whether the financial packages available to teachers are sufficient to attract and retain professionals within the education sector.
While his claims represent his personal experience and assessment, they have contributed to discussions about the need to improve the welfare and remuneration of teachers.
The ongoing concerns have also prompted calls for authorities and relevant stakeholders to engage with teacher unions to find lasting solutions to outstanding issues.
As negotiations and discussions over the teachers’ demands continue, the debate over salaries, allowances, working conditions and career opportunities within Ghana’s public service remains a major issue.
