Vice President Say Government Cannot Pay Teachers Because They’re Too Many,Interesting—PK
Ghanaian commentator P.K. Sarpong has taken aim at the government over the reported explanation by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for delays in paying arrears owed to teachers.
According to Sarpong, the reported suggestion that the large number of teachers makes it difficult for the government to settle the arrears raises questions about the value of professional promotions within the teaching service.
In a Facebook post, he questioned why teachers should continue investing their time and money in promotion examinations and professional development if the financial benefits attached to successful promotions are not paid promptly.
He argued that teachers are encouraged to upgrade their qualifications, pass promotion examinations and assume greater responsibilities, but may still have to wait indefinitely for the corresponding financial benefits.
“After all, what is the point of passing a promotion exam, taking on greater responsibility and qualifying for better remuneration when the government’s response is, ‘Sorry, there are too many of you’?” Sarpong wrote.
He further mocked the situation by suggesting that a future promotion examination could include a subject on “how to work hard, get promoted and still wait indefinitely for your money.”
Sarpong said if the number of teachers is indeed a major factor behind the arrears, the government should explain why should continue spending their resources on professional advancement when the financial rewards associated with such promotions could remain unpaid.
He maintained that the government’s encouragement for teachers to improve themselves professionally should be matched by a commitment to honour the financial obligations arising from those promotions.
According to him, the promotion, certificate and additional responsibilities may all be real, while the corresponding payment remains uncertain.
