Government to Build House for Late Afrigo Band Leader Moses Matovu

The Government of Uganda is reportedly set to honour late Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu by constructing a house on his land in Mukono, in recognition of his contribution to the country’s entertainment industry.

The announcement was reportedly made during a visit to Matovu’s family by State Minister for Information and Technology Joyce Nabbosa Ssebuggwawo and other government officials who paid tribute to the veteran musician.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Ssebuggwawo said the government maintains a working relationship with Uganda’s creative sector and would support efforts to preserve Matovu’s legacy.

“Government has a good working relationship with the different sectors of art, and through this relationship, we are going to help honour the memory of the late Moses Matovu by constructing a house on his land,” Ssebuggwawo said.

The planned house is part of efforts to recognise Matovu’s decades-long contribution to Uganda’s music industry. He was a founding member and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, whose career spanned several decades.

Matovu, 77, died on September 24, 2026, after sustaining injuries during an early-morning confrontation in Kibuli. Police opened a murder investigation, and a suspect was later arrested and charged in connection with his death.
