NSMQ Mourns Presby SHS Star Edward Anato Days Before He Was Due to Begin University

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) community is mourning Edward Anato, a contestant from Presbyterian Senior High School, Bompata, who has died shortly after helping the school reach the quarter-final stage of the 2026 competition.

NSMQ organisers announced his death on October 7, describing Anato as a brilliant quarter-finalist whose curiosity, courage and quiet brilliance stood out during the competition. The organisers did not disclose his age, circumstances of his death or funeral arrangements.

However, subsequent reports have stated that the young contestant died in a car accident. The cause has not been included in the official NSMQ tribute, so details surrounding the incident should be treated with caution until confirmed by his family, school or another authoritative source.

Anato was part of the Presbyterian SHS, Bompata team that achieved a historic milestone by reaching the NSMQ quarter-finals for the first time. In their quarter-final contest against PRESEC, Legon and defending champions Mfantsipim School, Bompata finished with 24 points, while PRESEC advanced with 56 points.

His death has also drawn attention to plans for his next stage of education. According to a report quoting a tribute from his chemistry teacher, Anato was expected to report to the University of Cape Coast on October 13 to study Computer Science.

The news has prompted condolences from members of the NSMQ community, educators and others who followed Bompata’s impressive campaign.

Anato’s passing comes as the school and his supporters continue to remember the contribution he made to one of the most notable NSMQ runs in Presbyterian SHS, Bompata’s history.
