Three women killed after a goods truck carrying passengers overturns on N1
Ask AI 1minThree women have been killed in a crash that has partially closed the N1 near Gyser in Limpopo’s Capricorn District, after a truck carrying passengers and goods overturned on Wednesday night.
Three women were killed and four other people, including three children, were injured when a truck transporting passengers and goods overturned on the N1 at Gyser, near the Astron Garage in Limpopo’s Capricorn District.
The crash occurred on Wednesday night, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.
Departmental spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said the truck reportedly suffered a tyre puncture before overturning, causing a significant obstruction on the N1.
“Preliminary reports indicate that three females, aged between 26 and 35 years, lost their lives at the scene,” Mabata said.
The driver and three children were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Mabata said preliminary investigations indicated that a tyre puncture may have caused the crash, while overloading was also being investigated as a possible contributing factor.
The N1 is partially closed, with one lane from Mokopane towards Polokwane open to traffic. Two lanes in the north-to-south direction, as well as part of the south-to-north lane, remain obstructed.
Traffic officials are at the scene managing traffic flow, while a heavy-duty recovery vehicle is being used to remove the overturned truck.
Mabata said motorists travelling from Mokopane to Polokwane are advised to use the R101.
Those travelling from Polokwane towards the south and Mokopane can also use the R101 and rejoin the N1 in Mokopane.
The N1 Brigade is on scene conducting point duty and managing traffic.
“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed and follow the instructions of traffic officials when approaching the affected area,” Mabata said.
She added that motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes where possible, as further delays are expected.
