RIP: See Who Was Reportedly Shot to Death in a Hail of Bullets That Left SA in Tears

Former African National Congress (ANC) leader in KwaZulu-Natal and former Richmond mayor Siminkosi Samora Ndlovu has died after being shot in a suspected ambush on the R56 near Thornville.

Ndlovu, 43, was reportedly travelling alone towards Pietermaritzburg in his BMW when another vehicle allegedly blocked his path. According to the information available, occupants of the other vehicle opened fire, striking Ndlovu in a hail of bullets. The motive for the shooting has not been established, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.

The shooting reportedly happened on the road near Thornville on Tuesday evening. Ndlovu was seriously wounded during the attack and was rushed to Richmond Clinic for emergency medical treatment. Because of the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to St Anne’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, Ndlovu reportedly succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the Pietermaritzburg hospital.

His death has sent shockwaves through the political community in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly among ANC structures where he had previously held leadership responsibilities. Ndlovu had also served as the mayor of Richmond, a municipality in the uMgungundlovu District, before continuing his involvement in party structures.

At the time of his death, Ndlovu was reportedly serving as a member of an ANC task team in the region. His continued involvement in the organisation meant that he remained active in political affairs despite no longer serving as mayor.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are expected to form part of a police investigation. Authorities will need to establish who carried out the attack, why Ndlovu was targeted and whether the shooting was linked to his political activities or another possible motive.

The use of a vehicle to allegedly block Ndlovu before gunmen opened fire has raised further questions about whether the attack was planned. However, no motive or identity of the suspected attackers has been confirmed in the information currently available.

As news of his death spread, attention turned to Ndlovu’s political career and his contribution to the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal. His death comes amid continued concerns over political violence and targeted killings in the province.

Police are expected to investigate the scene, gather evidence and search for information that could help identify those responsible. Any available CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts or other evidence could assist investigators in reconstructing the moments leading up to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack on the former Richmond mayor.
