FIREWORKS IN SENATE As UDA Senator Reveals Why Sifuna Will Never Win the Presidential Bid

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political ambitions, declaring that the broad-based government arrangement could remain dominant in Kenya for more than a century.

Cherargei made the remarks as political debate continues to intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Sifuna emerging as one of the prominent voices challenging the direction of the current administration.

The Nandi senator has previously criticised Sifuna over his opposition to the cooperation between President William Ruto and leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

In April 2025, Cherargei accused Sifuna, alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, of undermining the broad-based government arrangement.

Cherargei has also previously called for Sifuna’s removal from ODM leadership, arguing that his political stance was becoming a challenge to the Ruto-led arrangement.

The latest remarks add another layer to the increasingly heated political exchanges between the two senators.

Sifuna has maintained that political decisions ahead of 2027 should reflect the views of ordinary Kenyans.

His political activities have also increasingly placed him at the centre of opposition discussions, particularly around the future of ODM and the broader opposition landscape.

Cherargei, however, continues to defend the broad-based arrangement and has repeatedly argued that its political influence will endure.

His latest declaration that the arrangement could rule Kenya for “100 years plus” is likely to fuel further debate over the country’s political direction and the competing alliances taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, Cherargei and Sifuna remain on opposite sides of an increasingly prominent political debate over the future of Kenya’s governing coalition and opposition politics.
