Magic Knight Rayearth episode 1 recap: Who imprisoned Princess Emeraude and where are Hikaru, Umi and Fuu summoned?

Magic Knight Rayearth is back as a fresh 2026 television adaptation of the classic CLAMP manga that ran in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi from 1993 to 1996. The new series marks the first full TV anime for the property in roughly 31 years, following the original 1994–1995 run and a later OVA.

Directed by Yui Miura with animation by E&H production, it premiered on 7 October 2026 in TV Asahi’s IMAnimation W block, airing Wednesdays at 11:45 p.m. JST for two consecutive cours. English-subtitled and dubbed episodes land on Crunchyroll the same day.

The main cast features Ayane Sakura as Hikaru Shidou, Rumi Ookubo as Umi Ryuuzaki and Rie Takahashi as Fuu Hououji, with Saori Hayami as Princess Emeraude, Yuki Ono as Zagato, Mika Kikuchi returning as Mokona and Yuki Kaji as Clef.

Episode 1, titled “From Another World,” wastes little time getting the three girls out of Tokyo and into the fantasy land that needs them.

The episode opens with three middle-school students who do not know each other. Hikaru is on a social studies trip to Tokyo Tower with her class and is clearly enjoying the outing more than some of her classmates.

Umi and Fuu, from different schools, are also there. When the three strangers’ eyes meet, a voice cuts through calling for the legendary Magic Knights to save the world. A blinding light follows and they are pulled out of the tower and into another dimension.

They arrive in Cephiro, a world unlike anything they have seen. The transition is abrupt, as it was in the original story, and the girls are still processing the fact that they are no longer in Japan. Hikaru reacts with a mix of surprise and curiosity.

Umi is immediately focused on getting back, and Fuu stays more measured while trying to understand what just happened. The voice that summoned them belongs to Princess Emeraude, who used what power she still had to reach them before she was fully cut off.

Almost at once they meet Guru Clef, a youthful-looking mage who greets them as the Magic Knights. He explains that Cephiro’s peace depends on the Pillar, Princess Emeraude, whose continuous prayers and will maintain order.

High Priest Zagato has imprisoned her, and without that support the world is already slipping into chaos with monsters appearing. Clef makes it clear they were summoned by Emeraude herself and that they cannot simply return home. The only way back is to become the Magic Knights, rescue the princess and restore balance.

The girls’ personalities show through their reactions. Hikaru leans into the idea of helping and seems open to the adventure. Umi pushes back, wanting answers about how to get home rather than accepting the quest. Fuu listens carefully and tries to keep things practical.

Clef equips them with armour and begins unlocking basic magic so they have some defence. The scene keeps the exposition relatively direct, matching the brisk pace of the source material rather than stretching the explanation.

The conversation does not last long. One of Zagato’s servants attacks, interrupting the meeting. Clef holds them off and sends the three girls away on a flying creature, directing them toward the weaponsmith Presea in the Forest of Silence.

He also mentions Mokona, the small white creature who will act as their guide. Hikaru wants to turn back and help Clef, but the others convince her they need to keep moving. The episode ends with the trio heading into Cephiro proper, still strangers to each other and to the world, but now carrying the basic understanding of what is expected of them.

The attack serves as a quick reminder that Zagato’s forces are active and that the situation is already dangerous. There is no long fight or full resolution here; the point is to push the girls out of the initial meeting and onto the path of their quest.

By the close of the episode they know the destination of their next stop and that they will need proper weapons if they are to face what is waiting.

High Priest Zagato is the one who imprisoned Princess Emeraude. In the episode Clef states it plainly: Zagato took the Pillar captive, removing the prayers that kept Cephiro stable.

Emeraude is not simply a ruler; her will shapes the world itself, so her captivity is the direct cause of the monsters and the breakdown the girls will soon encounter. Zagato was once close to her side, which makes the betrayal feel sharper even in this early stage, though the episode does not dwell on his motives beyond the fact of the imprisonment.

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu were summoned from Tokyo Tower during their field trip to the world of Cephiro. The three were strangers from different schools until the moment their eyes met and Emeraude’s call pulled them through. They land in Cephiro and meet Clef there, learning that the summoning was deliberate and that their return depends on fulfilling the role of the Magic Knights.

The episode keeps the mechanics simple: a voice, a light, and then another world. It does not over-explain the process, leaving the larger rules of willpower and Rune Gods for later episodes while making the immediate stakes clear.

The result is a direct opening that answers the core questions of who took Emeraude and where the girls ended up, then sends them forward with Mokona toward Presea to continue the story.

New episodes of Magic Knight Rayearth stream on Crunchyroll on Wednesdays, with English subtitles and an English dub available. The series airs in Japan on TV Asahi’s IMAnimation W block and is expected to run for two consecutive cours.
