Shehbaz, Guterres discuss Kashmir, Gaza, Iran mediation and Afghan terrorism

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for concrete and verifiable action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil, saying a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s interest.

The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is on an official visit to Pakistan. PM Shehbaz welcomed the UN chief and praised his principled commitment to the UN Charter, multilateralism, international law, dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also paid tribute to Guterres for his contribution to international peace and security.

The prime minister said reforms at the United Nations should reflect the priorities of developing countries. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to UN peacekeeping and its continued role in maintaining international peace and security.

PM Shehbaz said dialogue and diplomacy were the only viable means of resolving disputes and preventing further escalation. He highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation, including its mediation role between the United States and Iran.

On Kashmir, the prime minister said the dispute should be resolved peacefully in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He said the Indus Waters Treaty was a binding international agreement and that India’s unilateral decision to place it in abeyance had no legal basis.

Expressing serious concern over terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and the presence of terrorist groups on Afghan soil, PM Shehbaz said concrete and verifiable action against such groups was necessary.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood, as well as the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803.

He called for greater access to affordable and concessional financing for developing countries to support development and climate resilience.

Guterres praised Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to the United Nations and international peace and security, particularly its role in UN peacekeeping and its constructive engagement in the Security Council. He also appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue, mediation and de-escalation.

Later, PM Shehbaz hosted a dinner in honour of the UN Secretary-General and his delegation.
