Oburu Oginga Death Rumours Spark Confusion as ODM Governor Gives Update
Rumours claiming that ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has died have spread on social media, causing confusion among Kenyans.
A post circulating on X claimed that “OBURU ODINGA YOUTH LEADER IS DEAD!” However, the claim has not been supported by credible reports.
Instead, the latest information from political leaders indicates that the veteran politician is alive and receiving medical attention in Nairobi.
The Star reported on October 6 that ODM communications director Philip Etale said Oburu was well after visiting Nairobi Hospital for a routine check-up.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also moved to calm the situation with a direct message about Oburu’s condition.
In a post shared on Tuesday evening, Wanga said: “My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery.”
Her statement directly contradicts the death claims circulating online and suggests that Oburu is continuing to recover while under medical care.
The latest reports come after The Star reported on October 5 that Oburu had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a chronic illness.
Capital FM also reported on October 6 that Oburu was under observation and improving after a medical issue involving his blood pressure.
This health situation appears to have created fresh room for speculation, especially as social media users shared unverified reports about his condition.
The death rumours are also not new. In September, Africa Check investigated similar claims that Oburu had died and found them to be false.
The fact-checking organisation said the politician was alive and had travelled to the United Kingdom for a medical check-up.
Oburu had also previously explained that his UK trip was for a routine medical assessment and rest, following advice from his doctors.
For now, the available evidence does not support claims that Oburu Oginga has died. Instead, statements from Gladys Wanga indicate that he is alive and recovering.
Kenyans are therefore being urged to avoid sharing unverified death reports, particularly when dealing with sensitive information about someone’s health.
Any major update on Oburu’s condition should come from his family, party officials or other credible sources rather than unverified social media posts.
